I feel like I talk about wedding weather alot, but this wedding was in 38 degree heat which had me melting and I’m sure that my face was a lovely shade of bright red throughout the afternoon. Jess and Kurt, used to Karratha’s heat, looked fresh all afternoon. Good thing I am the one behind the camera…

The ceremony was so pretty, at Quarantine Park in Bicton. Although I have been here so many times (because this is the hood I grew up in, sorry, people that grew up spending summers swimming at Bicton Baths shouldn’t say hood…) I have never photographed a wedding here and it is so beautiful! I loved how I could use the leaves to frame the ceremony photos, and the colours were so golden. After the ceremony we ventured to Fremantle (YAY!!!) for some photos at the Round House, Cliff Street and the E-Shed markets. I got to ride up front in the limo which was a VERY cool 1929 dodge stretched limo hired from Thirties Limosines. We had time for a few photos back at Bicton Baths before Jess & Kurt entered the reception at the East Fremantle Yacht Club.

I always thought that the Round House was built by convicts, I am pretty sure that was taught to me in Primary School but I found out LAST WEEK it was built 20 years before convicts arrived in Fremantle! Has nothing to do with the wedding, but I was shocked that I had believed a lie all these years (and maybe spread the lie to unsuspecting tourist friends who have visited me in Fremantle) and never bothered to read that little black plaque on the wall that is in many of my wedding and portrait photos that I take here…

I think that the limo really suited this location, it does have a little bit of a bonnie & clyde feel to it! You can imagine a heist going down in the warehouse… well I can anyway!

My first time at Fremantle Maritime Museum (well using it as a wedding location)

Best thing about having black and white as your theme colours for a wedding? Gorgeous black heels that you can wear again! How cool does Jess’s tattoo look?!

A quick bridal party portrait before heading back to East Fremantle.

Sometimes life just all comes to a head and you need to take time out. That was me last week. I had worked numerous (over 20) days straight, shooting and editing and the day job, and my back which has never been great since an accident a few years ago finally had enough and went into spasms every time I sat down. Not good for editing at a desk. So after trips to the physio, I decided to take a day off, and also hang out with my friend Rach (who I have travelled extensively with since working together in the UK) who was over for the weekend for a family function so we had one day to catch up on one years worth of gossip (there was a lot to catch up on, she is pregnant and moving states but unfortunately not to WA…)

Anyway I met her and her partner in Freo and showed them a little bit of my town (hee hee). Then we headed to Cottesloe for lunch then a walk on the beach. I am so glad I thought to bring the camera at the last minute (mainly to try and get an impromptu maternity session) because I totally forgot that the sculptures on the sea exhibition was being held at Cott. So here are a few images from my day off:

I met Rosie & Steve in Brentwood by the Swan River foreshore on a Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago. Rosie & Steve are getting married next weekend at Darlington Estate and wanted pre-wedding photo session before the wedding. I ride past here quite often and have always thought it would be nice for a little photo session. We started at the jetty then went up the Mount Henry Bridge bike path for that view of Perth, then onto a little beach for a few more shots.

I took this tonight at the costume hire place. I used to be the queen of homemade costumes! A grey nurse shark (grey dress, nurses hat & apron with a shark fin at the back made of paper mache) for an under-the-sea party, a very bright lion for a circus party made from an orange dress (don’t ask me why I owned an orange minidress… I used to have a lot of op-shop clothes) orange tights, mane made from Mum’s wool stash and another orange set of tights stuffed for the tail. And there were many other, cheap, homemade outfits. I don’t seem to have the time anymore (ummm that might be the job, business to run etc) so we cheated and went to the costume shop today to hire costumes for a Nautical themed party tomorrow. I am not going to ruin the surprise, you will have to watch the flickr site for a self-portrait maybe… but I took this and took a break from editing wedding photos to do a quick edit on this shot! I wish I could go to a masquerade ball in Venice one day, these are pretty cool!

Casey wanted bright wedding photo, ones that pop off the page. She was hoping for blue skys but on Saturday it wasn’t looking good for her. I love clouds on a wedding day (sorry brides) as there is no squinting eyes, or harsh shadows across faces. Even as Casey was motoring towards the venue it was spitting, as she walked down the jetty towards Mark, the clouds parted and Casey got her blue skies but there was still enough cloud cover to make me happy too!

I loved the details at this wedding, there were parasols and fans for guests incase it got too hot, the marque was lit by lanterns (I love lanterns!), even the wishing well had some cute photos of what Casey & Mark were wishing for. Casey arrived via the family boat, with her father the Captain ensuring she arrived on time and dry! The Mounts Bay Sailing Club provided the perfect location for the outdoor wedding with a beautiful view of the Swan River and Perth city. After the ceremony guests were able to mingle on the grass eating the wonderful food that was served up and playing the giant jenga and connect four games while the bridal party and family had some photos.

Casey & Mark had a wedding to have a big party and not to be away from their guests for hours having photos, so we had a few shots on the beach and at the jetty then they went back to join in the fun while the sun went down producing a spectacular Perth sunset (we managed to convince Mark to have another few minutes of photos). The main course arrived via Nunzio’s Mobile Pizza to satisfy the hungry hoards of guests and there were a lot of (very yummy-I managed to sneak a slice, I may have discovered the reason I gain weight during wedding season) slices going around. When I left after the speeches and first dance, everyone was dancing the night away with the twinkling lights of the city in the background.

It was an amazing wedding and the evening ran very smoothly thanks to Michelle from Weddings by Michelle. Casey planned most of the details, but hired Michelle to take control of the planning for the day, the set up and making everything perfect with the “I do” package.

Casey’s arrival:

Heading down to the beach for the “location” shots!

Casey looked gorgeous and so happy all day!

And look, we got some beautiful blue sky!

Heading to the jetty the clouds came over again and the light started to fade…

The bridal party and the classic “boy” shot. Tough, very tough…

The time difference between these two shots is around an hour… Look at how the sky changed! And the pink another reason why I like clouds, something to do with refraction of light with moisture as the sun goes down…

More pink light! So pretty!

Ok. I couldn’t figure out my favourite 2 from these 4 images. So I put them all in! Sorry if you have a slow internet browser

Some of the details of the wedding

Now on to giant Jenga! This is so cool but made a racket when it came tumbling down!

The pizza mobile - such a great idea at a cocktail wedding to ensure guests are well fed (and the alcohol can be soaked up…)

The cupcakes looked SOOOO yummy! They were from the Cake Factory.

And the first dance with the sparkly lights of Perth…

Casey & Mark I hope you had an amazing night and an even better time on your honeymoon! See you when you get back!!

I met Silvia, Chris, Jonathan and their dog Charlie (who is a bundle of energy) at Bicton Baths on a Sunday morning at 8am! Ahhh the life of a photographer. Silvia & Chris had their wedding photos taken here so thought it would be nice to have some family portraits here, now they have moved on to a new phase in their married life, I think the phase that means that 8am is an acceptable time to get out of the house. I am not quite there yet and was very glad to be behind the camera rather than in front of it - a feeling I get quite often to be honest!

Bicton Baths is such a beautiful location and the morning was truly stunning and suited this gorgeous family. And I think Jonathan is the first child I have completed a family portrait session with that didn’t cry, yell ‘no’ at me, run away from me or generally hate me. YES!!! I love taking family portraits but it is hard when the little, cute ones in the family take an instant dislike to you… But Jonathan had a really curious nature and was looking at the camera and even crawling towards me!

I learnt a big lesson at this pre-wedding photoshoot… If the temperature in Perth is over 40 degrees C, do NOT head to a dog beach after 5pm for a photoshoot. Every person and his or her dog were at Whitfords Dog Beach on this Sunday afternoon when I met Melissa, Mattie and their 2 babies (didn’t you know, dogs are people too).

One of the reasons for having a pre-wedding shoot is to get all those nerves out the way when in front of the camera. When there is a-gazillion people staring at you wandering why you are having photos on the beach, there is no way the nerves are going to subside and even I was self conscious with all those people around.

Anyway… Melissa and Mattie are getting married at the end of March on the beach down south and I am looking forward to it! Especially since Melissa sent me some photos of the beach this week and it looks stunning! Unfortunately their 2 little Jack Russells will not be attending the wedding so here are some shots of them (and Melissa and Mattie) at the beach.

I have been blogstalking Jasmine Star for a couple of years and am amazed by this photographer who has had phenomenal success and has been working in wedding photography for less than 4 years! When it was announced that she was coming to Sydney to conduct one of her workshops I jumped at the chance! I missed out on the first round as I was in China and missed the announcement by a day or two (yup I was reading her blog on my ipod touch in our hotel lobby in Beijing and that is where I sent off the workshop request!) but was lucky to get offered a place in the second workshop!

So on January 10th I flew the midnight horror from Perth to Sydney and attended the day workshop on the 12th and it was so worth it! It was held at the Cruise Bar Sydney which overlooked the harbour and for an out-of-towner I have to say that it was a spectacular sight and made me happy just to look out at the Sydney Opera House and the signature green and yellow ferries heading out to Manly. The woman behind the workshop coming to Sydney was Cathy Crawley who did and extraordinary job organising both the days and perfecting all the details.

The afternoon session included a photoshoot of three beautiful models, the gorgeous couple Allana & Karim and Kara. The wedding dressers were provided by Catherine Colubriale and the flowers provided by Daisy Chain Florists. I just loved the fluffy layers on Allana’s dress. Ok that might not be the technical term…

The day was definitely not about the photo shoot, we were there to learn how Jasmine achieved such success, her workflow and hopefully pick up some tips but it was very fun, even when we were almost shutdown by the port authority at the Rocks…

Just so sweet…

Working that gorgeous dress!

Shoe & flower details! These were Cathy’s shoes - aren’t they amazing!

The stunning Kara

One more of those shoes!

Note: This is No. 39 ticked off my 101 in 1001 days list! Woo Hoo!

Kate & I have been friends forever. I lost my first tooth in her swimming pool at her 6th birthday party. In high school we used to spend all day in classes together, catching the bus home together to Freo then ring each other when we got home to chat for another couple of hours. I am not sure what we had to talk about after a whole day of school together, and sometimes would just sing out favourite songs at the time, Violent Femmes or REM or some other song playing on JJJ.

So we have grown up, went to different Universities, but ended up in London within 6 months of each other and stayed for five years and left within 6 months of each other to return to Perth. Kate gets married in a few months and I get to sign the register (official duties that don’t involve a camera!!!) and I am so excited for the wedding day and also the awesome hens night we are planning which may involve high tea, cocktails, icecream and a slumber party!

I popped over yesterday to her house to take photos of little William now he is 6 months and I got a little carried away capturing the little details in her house. Kate was always the more stylish of the two of us and instead of feeling like her friend I sometimes felt like the awkward little sister when we were out at parties or ‘hanging’ in Freo. Her classic sense of style has infiltrated her weatherboard cottage and I couldn’t help myself in capturing and sharing these images.

Happy Valentines Day everyone!!!

Tina & Peter booked me for their wedding in October of this year, but then couldn’t wait and brought the date forward by 8 months! After a few telephone calls rearranging dates with the reception venue, they chose Joondalup Resort for their venue to hold the ceremony and reception.

The day was not the typical early February day as the sun was not blasting down and there were clouds in the sky! In Perth clouds are a good thing for weddings in Summer, no harsh sun beating down on your face, no shadows across faces, yup, I really do like clouds.

After the short ceremony in a very bush environment, the bridal party hopped on golf carts (and we photographers were driven which is why there are photos of the carts - no shooting and driving for us!) and headed out on the golf course for some photos. Avoiding a few golfers who were taking advantage of the cooler summers day, there are a few little spots that are great for bridal portraits. My favourite, Moon Crater, we could only visit for a couple of minutes as there were some enthusiastic golfers teeing off at the top of the hole as we arrived so while they were finding a lost ball in the rough (how good are my golfing terms? huh? huh?) we stole a few moments in the crater!

The first dance…

The partying then started in the reception, where the guests took to the dance floor and danced the Macarena, the chicken dance as well as some air guitar to November rain! There was some serious conversation and what looks to be a case of ‘photobombing’, or a very enthusiastic group photo participant at the very least. I like a bit of enthusiasm for photos at the reception, because most the time this is when guests start to hate the photographer…

A big thank-you to Dani from Wheatbelt Photography for second shooting for me and for her help in downloading and choosing images for the same-day slideshow I showed at the reception.
