Perth Wedding and Portrait Photographer

Sunday Sweetness…

I am supposed to be on a diet in preparation for summer and the wedding season (lots of food and cake and a lot of sitting on my bum in front of my computer…) so I made chocolate brownies yesterday.  Oh well, I will go to the gym tomorrow…

Sarah & Damian: Perth Wedding Photography

I had such a hard time limiting the images for the blog posting!  I love shooting a home wedding and Sarah & Damian’s wedding was pretty spectacular as their property at the foothills of Perth surrounded by bushland and farms.  The backyard was looking stunning after months of hard work, the marque was set up and the sounds of the trio Wonderful with Wine greeting guests.

Sarah was a stunning bride and her dress was amazing!

I love this shot where Sarah’s Grandmother is playing with her own wedding ring as everyone was getting their hair and makeup done:

While I was with Sarah & the girls, Dale was shooting Damian as he was getting ready.

I chose a selection of Dale’s shots for the ceremony images, because he used his 70-200 lens, getting in close to record the special moments.

After the ceremony at Sarah & Damian’s house, I left Dale to shoot the guests having a great time while we went off for photos.  These next images were taken from behind their property on a bridle path, looking back at their property.  The light was simply stunning for them and what an amazing place to call home!

We then went to a part on the way to the beach.  I love the way their hands are entwined in this image :)

Doesn’t Sarah just look amazing in the next series of images?  This is my favourite time of year to shoot as you get the such beautiful light.

After the park we headed to the beach for a sunset session…  There was this submarine snorkel sticking out of the grounds!  I love finding bizarre backdrops at a shoot!

Again, how is the light!  Breaking rules, shooting into the sun but oh my goodness!

Jen & Jason: Perth Wedding Photography

Before I met Jen and Jason, via email, Jen informed me that their wedding was going to be semi-unusual as she was not wearing a traditional wedding dress and that they were trying to make it as least wedding-like as possible.

When I met them, they showed me the picture of the dress, the car that they had hired and informed me it was a 50’s style wedding.  Well a wedding set in the era between 1955 and 1965.  After Jen chose her dress apparently the theme just grew from there.

Jen and Jason met 14 years ago and their wedding date was 14 years to the day that they officially called themselves a couple!. Their families had given up on them getting married so not only did they surprise them, by getting engaged, they kept the theme of the wedding a secret.  For their wedding invite, they sent out vintage Hawaii postcards, fuelling speculation that they had a Hawaiian theme for the wedding party.

I met Jen and Jason before the ceremony for photos so that they could party with their friends straight after the ceremony and not leave their guests for a couple of hours (with all the food and alcohol, far better to enjoy it with their guests).  One of the venues for the photos was the Como Hotel.  The décor is distinctly 50’s, especially the upstairs area and there was even a cute moped to have a couple of poses on!

It was a pretty amazing wedding to shoot, but my favourite part was definitely when Jen and Jason appeared at Heathcote to walk down the aisle together and their family and friends all gasped and cheered at their cool get up.  It kind of made me want to be a videographer, for a split second and then I snapped out of it.  After the ceremony, the couple and guests relaxed in the wine room and balcony eating, drinking and listening to the cool sounds from 1955-1965.

Congratulations Jen and Jason!  Thankyou for inviting me to be apart of your day and capture your amazingly cool wedding!

Perth Wedding Photography: Sneak Peak

To my poor, neglected blog:  I am sorry that I have not updated you for over two weeks.  I promise that I will be posting lots and lots of images soon to keep you happy for a while from a couple of amazing weddings that I have been privileged to photograph.  Plus maybe a few from some portrait sessions and soon my new house and studio… but probably the mountains of boxes that are being packed up at the moment first.

To keep you happy for the moment, I have one image of Sarah, who I photographed last Saturday.

Ok maybe two…  This one was taken at a park at 4.30pm.  I love the soft, May light coming through the trees.

I am off to my best friend’s wedding tomorrow, as a guest!  I cannot wait to watch Kate walk down the aisle, listen to the vows and I get to sign the register too!

Have a great weekend!

Melissa & Mattie: Perth Wedding Photography

I was supposed to blog this yesterday, but I didn’t realise that I would have so much trouble narrowing down my favourites for the blog post.

The girls got ready at the Broadwater Villas in Busselton, just metres for the beach where the ceremony was held.  Melissa loves the beach so naturally it was a beautiful beach wedding, although it was touch and go for a little while because of the rain, but with one hour to go the sun came out, sort of.

While I was photographing the girls, Dale met the boys at their Villa in town and got to photograph some pretty awesome cars, oh and the boys too.  Melissa and Mattie share a love of fast cars and there were plenty of them on show at this wedding.  After the ceremony and the bridal party portraits on the beach, a procession of cars followed Melissa & Mattie in the Limo to Donnybrook, where the reception was held at Melissa’s parents home.

A big thankyou to Dale, for second shooting for me (and getting the high shots - it helps being over 6 foot tall I guess) and Hugh, Chris & John from Stellar Visions, who did the videography which I am sure will be amazing.

Melissa & Mattie, thankyou for letting me capture your beautiful wedding and I hope you enjoy the images!

blog12I have seen some wedding photographers take ladders to weddings, all Dale needs to do is lift the camera above his head to get a shot like the one on the right (notice the other one, taken at my measly 5″2′ for a completely different angle… *sigh*)

blog13The sun was cooperating for this shot!

365 Day Project: February Roundup

A little late to blog last month’s 365 day project collage, but still haven’t missed a day (although again a close call on a busy Tuesday night and managed to grab a photo of Dale’s surfboard that has retired to the lounge).

A little more interesting this month (maybe as there are no battery photos this time!).  My early morning bike rides were good for capturing a couple of images that I would usually be asleep for.  I got into a little Chinese cooking for Chinese New Year, and had my camera with me at the costume shop to capture the masks which I think along with the lavender at Kate’s house are my 2 favourites of the month.  I even got a self portrait in there too.  I must to a couple more of those although lying on the ground with the heavy camera in the air, not good on the arms…  Oh and my niece is the baby I shot on the ground (she wasn’t too happy about that) in case anyone was thinking I was hiding a child somewhere…

Cottesloe Beach: Sculptures by the Sea

Sometimes life just all comes to a head and you need to take time out.  That was me last week.  I had worked numerous (over 20) days straight, shooting and editing and the day job, and my back which has never been great since an accident a few years ago finally had enough and went into spasms every time I sat down.  Not good for editing at a desk.  So after trips to the physio, I decided to take a day off,  and also hang out with my friend Rach (who I have travelled extensively with since working together in the UK) who was over for the weekend for a family function so we had one day to catch up on one years worth of gossip (there was a lot to catch up on, she is pregnant and moving states but unfortunately not to WA…)

Anyway I met her and her partner in Freo and showed them a little bit of my town (hee hee).  Then we headed to Cottesloe for lunch then a walk on the beach.  I am so glad I thought to bring the camera at the last minute (mainly to try and get an impromptu maternity session) because I totally forgot that the sculptures on the sea exhibition was being held at Cott.  So here are a few images from my day off:

Day 56: 365 day project

I took this tonight at the costume hire place.  I used to be the queen of homemade costumes!  A grey nurse shark (grey dress, nurses hat & apron with a shark fin at the back made of paper mache) for an under-the-sea party, a very bright lion for a circus party made from an orange dress (don’t ask me why I owned an orange minidress… I used to have a lot of op-shop clothes) orange tights, mane made from Mum’s wool stash and another orange set of tights stuffed for the tail.  And there were many other, cheap, homemade outfits.  I don’t seem to have the time anymore (ummm that might be the job, business to run etc) so we cheated and went to the costume shop today to hire costumes for a Nautical themed party tomorrow.  I am not going to ruin the surprise, you will have to watch the flickr site for a self-portrait maybe… but I took this and took a break from editing wedding photos to do a quick edit on this shot!  I wish I could go to a masquerade ball in Venice one day, these are pretty cool!

Casey & Mark: Wedding Photography

Casey wanted bright wedding photo, ones that pop off the page.  She was hoping for blue skys but on Saturday it wasn’t looking good for her.  I love clouds on a wedding day (sorry brides) as there is no squinting eyes, or harsh shadows across faces.  Even as Casey was motoring towards the venue it was spitting, as she walked down the jetty towards Mark, the clouds parted and Casey got her blue skies but there was still enough cloud cover to make me happy too!

I loved the details at this wedding, there were parasols and fans for guests incase it got too hot, the marque was lit by lanterns (I love lanterns!), even the wishing well had some cute photos of what Casey & Mark were wishing for.  Casey arrived via the family boat, with her father the Captain ensuring she arrived on time and dry!  The Mounts Bay Sailing Club provided the perfect location for the outdoor wedding with a beautiful view of the Swan River and Perth city.  After the ceremony guests were able to mingle on the grass eating the wonderful food that was served up and playing the giant jenga and connect four games while the bridal party and family had some photos.

Casey & Mark had a wedding to have a big party and not to be away from their guests for hours having photos, so we had a few shots on the beach and at the jetty then they went back to join in the fun while the sun went down producing a spectacular Perth sunset (we managed to convince Mark to have another few minutes of photos).   The main course arrived via Nunzio’s Mobile Pizza to satisfy the hungry hoards of guests and there were a lot of (very yummy-I managed to sneak a slice, I may have discovered the reason I gain weight during wedding season) slices going around.  When I left after the speeches and first dance, everyone was dancing the night away with the twinkling lights of the city in the background.

It was an amazing wedding and the evening ran very smoothly thanks to Michelle from Weddings by Michelle.  Casey planned most of the details, but hired Michelle to take control of the planning for the day, the set up and making everything perfect with the “I do” package.

The time difference between these two shots is around an hour…  Look at how the sky changed!  And the pink another reason why I like clouds, something to do with refraction of light with moisture as the sun goes down…

More pink light!  So pretty!

Ok.  I couldn’t figure out my favourite 2 from these 4 images.  So I put them all in!  Sorry if you have a slow internet browser :(

Tina & Peter: Wedding Photography

Tina & Peter booked me for their wedding in October of this year, but then couldn’t wait :) and brought the date forward by 8 months!   After a few telephone calls rearranging dates with the reception venue, they chose Joondalup Resort for their venue to hold the ceremony and reception.

The day was not the typical early February day as the sun was not blasting down and there were clouds in the sky!  In Perth clouds are a good thing for weddings in Summer, no harsh sun beating down on your face, no shadows across faces, yup, I really do like clouds.

After the short ceremony in a very bush environment, the bridal party hopped on golf carts (and we photographers were driven which is why there are photos of the carts - no shooting and driving for us!) and headed out on the golf course for some photos.  Avoiding a few golfers who were taking advantage of the cooler summers day, there are a few little spots that are great for bridal portraits.  My favourite, Moon Crater, we could only visit for a couple of minutes as there were some enthusiastic golfers teeing off at the top of the hole as we arrived so while they were finding a lost ball in the rough (how good are my golfing terms? huh? huh?) we stole a few moments in the crater!

The first dance…

The partying then started in the reception, where the guests took to the dance floor and danced the Macarena, the chicken dance as well as some air guitar to November rain!  There was some serious conversation and what looks to be a case of ‘photobombing’, or a very enthusiastic group photo participant at the very least.  I like a bit of enthusiasm for photos at the reception, because most the time this is when guests start to hate the photographer…

A big thank-you to Dani from Wheatbelt Photography for second shooting for me and for her help in downloading and choosing images for the same-day slideshow I showed at the reception.
